Images for "My Homies", a Black in Every Color group exhibition curated by Nakeyta Moore in DTLA. Presented by: Valence Projects x ARTLOUDLA.
In My Homies, I explore the layered, evolving nature of home—not just as a physical space, but as an emotional and symbolic one. Home is both grounding and transient, a place we return to even as it shifts beneath us. Through these photographs, I trace my personal journey through the spaces and relationships that have shaped me, drawing on intimate moments with my grandfather and the memories that tether me to a place, even as it becomes unfamiliar.
The first image, a photograph of my grandfather entering the home where I spent much of my childhood, speaks to the deep ties between familial spaces and selfhood. This house, once a vessel of love, care, and connection, now holds the weight of memory, its familiarity laced with distance in the wake of his passing. My grandfather was a home to me—his presence a sanctuary—but dementia gradually unraveled that foundation, leaving both of us searching for something that was once certain.
The second piece, an abstract self-portrait, embodies the transient nature of home and identity. Layered with images from my childhood, my blurred figure represents the shifting, elusive quality of belonging. The people and places that once defined home remain embedded in me, even as they change or fade.
